Scandal!’s Kgomotso Christopher on the sacrifice that kicked off her career

After years of dominating our small screens, Scandal! actress, Kgomotso Christopher (39), proves she’s the best of the best.

Kgomotso won the best soapie actress award at the Saftas earlier this year. It’s her first award since she started acting over six years ago.

The star was previously nominated three times under the same category but this time she beat Uzalo actress, Dawn King and Isibaya actress, Nomzamo Mbatha. The mother of two says she didn’t expect to win.

She tells Move! that she wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for Calvin, her husband of 15 years. Kgomotso and her husband spent eight years in the UK and America where she did her Masters in Arts. She shares that her husband, who is a lawyer working for an international bank, left his home country, America, and sacrificed everything he had for her to come back to South Africa and be an actress.

“I left home when I was just 21 and I came back married with two kids. I was working behind the scenes and my husband could see that I wasn’t happy and he said ‘let’s go to South Africa and see what happens’,” she says.

She says when she came back, she was still figuring motherhood out. Her children are 22 months apart and they were small at the time.

Kgomotso wanted to be on TV since she was four. She says she would always cry when she saw people on screen. She recalls an instance where her mother broke a television set to show her that it had nothing but wires inside.

She shares that her parents encouraged her to take on drama and arts as extra mural activities. It was only after she returned home from overseas that she started living her dream. The talented actress became a household name shortly after joining Isidingo as Katlego Sibeko. She’s now on’s popular soapie, Scandal!.

She plays Yvonne, a scheming and conniving Sotho woman who’d do anything to get her way. Her role earned her an award at the Saftas.

Things are falling into place for the star, her kids are all grown up and the hustle is paying off. It took 10 years for the talented actress to finally get the recognition she worked so hard for. She is enjoying juggling motherhood and her career.

“You don’t know how it feels to be a mother until you become one. I went through a rebirth and learnt a lot of things about myself,” she says.
