6 local TV shows on production break due to Covid-19 exposure

Local TV productions resumed production on 4 May after going on breaks while the country was on lockdown level 5.

Now, although precautionary measures were put in place on set to protect cast and crew members from being infected with the coronavirus, some have been exposed to the virus and production had to halted once again.

The SABC has put measures and restrictions on set to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Speaking to DRUM on the banning of kissing scenes in all SABC-associated soapies, the SABC spokesperson said, “In relation to intimate scenes, the government’s position on social distancing is clear and must continue to be adhered to. Production houses wishing to shoot intimate scenes will use creative ways to do so. The SABC will continue to ensure full compliance with all regulations set by the government during this period, as well as strictly prioritising adherence to health and safety measures, for the benefit of our employees and production houses alike.”

Here is a list of South African dramas that have gone on production breaks, though.


In a statement issued by the show, the production confirmed that they will be taking a break from shooting.

“Due to the possibility of one of the Word of Mouth Pictures employees being exposed to someone with Covid-19, SABC2’s Muvhango has had to halt production until further notice.”

2. The River 

The River decided to halt production after a colleague tested positive for Covid-19. They issued a statement showing their empathy for the crew member.

“The production house behind The River has since halted shooting and all the cast members and crew have been asked to self-isolate while the necessary health protocols are being implemented.”

3.Skeem Sam 

The SABC1 show confirmed the news via a statement and explained that one of their colleagues had come into direct contact with a relative who tested positive for the virus.

“It is with dismay that we confirm that a colleague has come into direct contact with a relative that has tested positive for Covid-19. Therefore, for the safety and health of everyone, we have taken the decision to pause shooting until further notice. The crew member and everyone that they have been in contact with have all tested and are awaiting results.”

4.Rhythm City 

Rhythm City was put on pause after a cast member tested positive for Covid-19.

“Production has been halted on the set of the e.tv soapie after an actress on the show tested positive for coronavirus.”

Scandal! has had to halt production following a positive case of Covid-19 on their sister soapie set, Rhythm City.

“E.tv’s number one show has had to follow its neighbour Rhythm City at Sasani Studios and halt production following a positive Covid-19 on set.”

"It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that one of our colleagues has tested positive for Covid-19," Danie Odendaal Productions told Channel24 on Thursday afternoon in response to a media enquiry.

"For this reason, and for the health and safety of everyone involved in the show, we have immediately halted production until further notice."
