I grew up around a big family in a very small village. I was always a hard-working learner; from the time I was in primary school. I always wanted to make a name for myself because I didn’t want to end up like some of the people in our village. Poverty had a home in our village. It is all about survival of the fittest. You look around and see a lot of teenage pregnancy and unemployment and that leads to crime. There’s nothing to do, no entertainment and to go into town, you have to pay R35 for a taxi. In my home, no one works besides my brother. He can only help us here and there because he does not earn much. All of this motivated me to work hard at school. I wanted to grow up and one day be able to provide for my family.
