A dildo is a good old-fashioned sex toy. It comes in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, colours, textures and materials. But they all have one thing in common – they’re shaped like a penis.

Unlike a vibrator, they are usually not motorised, so it’s all hands-on deck! Here’s the lowdown on the different kinds so you can see which one will work best for you and your partner – or just you.

THE REALISTIC DILDO

These are made to resemble the real deal as much as possible. They are often made of silicone and come in an array of shapes and sizes and have lifelike features such as testicles, bulging veins and in some cases fake pubic hair.

THE G-SPOT DILDO

These dildos are curved with the aim of stroking your g-spot (that rough, spongy bit on the front wall of the vagina, a few centimetres in from the entrance).

THE GLASS DILDO

Shatter-resistant glass ones are firm, durable, smooth and pretty! They are also known to be the most hygienic, as they are non-porous. Some also have a beaded texture and are perfect for being cooled down or warmed up for added sensation.

SUCTION CUP DILDO

Typically made of silicone, this dildo comes with a suction cup at one end so it can be attached to a flat surface such as a shower wall or floor for hands-free fun. Some of them allow for a strap-on harness.

THE STRAP-ON DILDO

Perfect for penetration pleasure, dildos with a strap on function (straps that wrap around your waist with the dildo attached at the front) are great for men with erectile dysfunction, lesbians and anal play.

THE DOUBLE-ENDED DILDO

These longer dildos are multipurpose tools. For solo play, they can be bent and used to penetrate the vagina and the anus at the same time. For a twosome, one end of the dildo can be inserted into one partner’s anus or vagina and the other end can be used by the other partner.

DILDO SIZE

Online intimate product brand Olivia Grey says the average size of an erect penis is 12.9cm long. It suggests you give yourself room to play and opt for a dildo size of between 17cm and 20cm in length. This size is usually about 3.8cm in diameter.

ONLINE BUYING

Online adult store desir.co.za suggests these tips when buying a dildo online: Consider the toy material, how long it will last and its potential functions. You can ask about this if the information is not readily available on a website. Stay away from jelly dildos or rubber dildos. They may contain toxic chemicals like phthalates. If you want a dildo that’s easy to clean, glass dildos are probably the way to go.
