Open letter to the newly elected Mayor of Tshwane

25 August 2016, 14:27
Congratulations on your election of Tshwane Mayor Mr Msimanga!! The people of Tshwane have spoken!!!

Alcohol abuse has played a big part in the Moot area for many  MANY years......dating as far back as the 80's(Born in 1980 myself).

It is a cold hard fact.

I dread commuting to work on Mondays with my wife and 2 year old daughter. Driving down Johan Heyns/Steve Biko Rd towards the CBD gives me the chills....as you will most likely see debris at intersections accompanied by an erected cross and flowers mourning the dearly departed the following week.

100's if not 1000's of people have lost their lives in the past 30+ years in this street alone. Voortrekker Road and dicing(racing) on this stretch of road is part and parcel of the demographics of the greater Tshwane and has been even before our democracy was born in 1994.

I commute from Wonderboom South to Centurion daily, taking the back roads to avoid congested traffic and e-tolls for the most part. Most Mondays and some Fridays(I know the schedule better than most) you will find a bus load of TMPD trainees (actual bus loads of trainees) manning Botha Road in Lyttleton.......only focusing on taxis and trucks. 3 Years commuting the same road Mon-Friday...and not once have I been pulled over. Although I feel a sense of pride by not being pulled over in 3 years, how many other people have been left of the hook?

To my knowledge, most accidents and infractions occur between 6pm and 6am. Not sure how pulling over taxis and trucks from Mon to Fri  at 3pm is assisting our trainee Law Enforcers by any means.

I implore you, Mayor Solly Msimanga, crack down on traffic offenses and by laws..Get the people back in line and have them respect our laws, our people and our local government..Have zero tolerance towards drunk driving and traffic offenses. We as the Tshwane public have been left to our own devices for far to long.

After all, you have promised us change.

"When life changes to be harder, change yourself to be stronger. What hurts you today, makes you stronger tomorrow"

Please do not fail us.......

Your friendly neighbour

Wayne
