My Christmas Wish

2010-11-26 09:00

OMG.  Is it just me or is the 94.7 Breakfast Express show still so painfully anal?

You know what? I’ve tried. I’ve really tried.

Since the “new” version of the show first started airing, (I use the term “new” lightly as the show is nothing more than the same old regurgitated pig slop that they ran when Jeremy Mansfield was still around) I have given it more than just a small chance.

A chance to entertain me. To keep me interested. To hold my attention.

It hasn’t.

Darren “Wackhead” Simpson is trying, but he still sounds like an uncertain adolescent trying desperately to grow up and to fill Mansfield’s big shoes.

Sam Cowen is same old Sam, minus a few pounds. Sure, she'll produce the odd one-liner classic, but most of the time she takes the form of the voice of reason, quite often the annoying voice of reason.

I’ve found myself listening to other breakfast shows in the mornings; 702 with John Robbie has its moments, so does 5FM's Gareth Cliff. When I do make the mistake of tuning into 94.7's Breakfast Express, I am always disappointed.

Now I know what people will say, “If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it”, blah blah. But that’s what public broadcasting is all about. You're putting yourself out there. You're offering your talents and entertainment to the public. It's too easy to say "well then listen to something else". To work in the public domain is to open oneself up, to invite, legitimate public scrutiny and criticism.

My point is, the Morning Express show, is the same old, same old. Rehashed, completely contrived, predictable, with minimal entertainment value. As I say, painfully, evidently, rehearsed.

Even the emotionally charged Christmas Wish - which I’m sorry to say is as bland as my mom's beef stroganoff  - is not the insert it used to be.

The Morning Express is completely contrived and still offers very little in terms of decent radio entertainment.

My request to Primedia Broadcasting is this: My only Christmas Wish is that you pull the plug on this rubbish. Put the show, and the bleeding public, all out of our misery in 2011.

I totally agree. The teary Christmas Wish is what made me switch to OFM in the mornings. But there too is a feature that irritates the living daylights out of me. I guess we will have to learn to deal with the presenter's self-importance.

  • mashishiv - 2010-11-26 09:25

i used to listen to 5fm,but since gareth "the racist" cliff revealed himself, i dont anymore!

      Really?? - 2010-11-26 09:37

i dont think he is racist!!?

      AJ - 2010-11-26 09:51

@Really?? - he means Gareth "who had the audacity to criticise a black led government" Cliff;rather just leave the troll.

      SimonP - 2010-11-26 09:53

You call Cliff a racist, now how about you back that up with some examples of why you think he is. Once again I think you are confusing criticism of government as racism, which as all sane people know, it is not.

      jwill - 2010-11-26 09:54

Gareth has a lot to say about all people, not just black people. That doesn't make him a racist. Maybe other words but not a racist necessarily.

      Xolani - 2010-11-26 09:56

I'm black and I dont think he is racist either. I follow him on tweeter. and anyway some of his best friends are black !!!! He is just the White Julius !!! (he likes to talk before thinking)

      Susannomore - 2010-11-26 10:18

I find him more of a socialist than a racist. It is all to easy to call someone racist these days, as long as they are a different colour. He simply calls a spade a spade, no matter what their race, colour or creed...

      DeonL - 2010-11-26 10:27

Reasons why people give when you criticise the government are 1) You are a racist 2) It is apartheids fault. 3) We are stil learning! Some things never change!

      Limpopoist - 2010-11-26 10:44

gareth is not a racist,he just like to tell as it is....

      SimonP - 2010-11-26 10:45

@DeonL, spot on. @Mashishiv, nothing to say?

      kevinmet - 2010-11-26 11:18

@mashishiv do you and people like you even think before blurting out 'racist' anymore? do you still remember what the word means, do you have to do anything to warrant being called racist or is it just an automatic reaction to anything you dont like? Look at the above article, it is about a RADIO SHOW, and you manage to reduce it to race!?! why not try move forward with the rest of the country instead of dwelling on race? Initially it will be hard, you'll have to get attention by maybe a good deed, or valid opinion.. but hopefully you'll eventually leave the race card at home. Its painful to read, its painful to hear.. grow up buddy! the world doesnt care who you deem racist!

      Xolani - 2010-11-26 11:57

@kevinmet : what do you mean by "people like you" ? I'm black & I've stated on the same thread that I dont think Gareth is black. Everyone ignores that and harp on mashishiv's comment (which he is legally entitled to by the way). Stop generalising and stereotyping, maybe, just maybe we will all have a chance to live togethor in harmony side by side.

      Xolani - 2010-11-26 11:59

error : I'm black & I've stated on the same thread that I dont think Gareth is black. Should read I'm black & I've stated on the same thread that I dont think Gareth is racist.

      SimonP - 2010-11-26 12:01

@kevinmet, I have been trying to tell the same people that criticism of a government for poor performance/corruption is not racism, but alas the penny will not drop. My guess is they knnow if they do not have the race card to wave they will have to ask their government for accountability.

      SimonP - 2010-11-26 12:09

@Xolani, I think you will find "people like you" is not anything of a racial nature, but more to do with brain power.

      SimonP - 2010-11-26 13:22

@poloyatonki "Any white man who attacks ANC is racist". So its true, you dont know the definition of racism, at last we have established something.

      kevinmet - 2010-11-26 14:19

@Xolani Exactly my point.. Where in the words "people like you" do you find any reference to race?? When I say that, I mean ignorant, stubborn people that keep pulling that damned race card out. Every race does it man, its not skin colour, its mindset! @SimonP, agreed man.. Good leaders deal with criticism well. Most of our leaders unfortunately don't, and the race card is definitely the number 1 defensive mechanism! Divert attention at all costs! its sad man..

      FerretGee - 2010-11-26 14:47

Cliff Racist?? Typical comment from an ANC sheep! Why is it whenever a white man critizes the ANC we are branded racist? Critism does not equate to racism. Get over using this race card all the time, it's wearing thin!

      Zion - 2010-11-26 17:34

Gareth may not be a racist but he is definitely a self important pain in the gat.

      ir8m8 - 2010-12-02 10:53

everytime we whitees critisize, its racist, what exactly do you have to say about Paulo Jordan's latest tyraid, is he now also a racist?, "We the People" includes us whitees. Freedom of Speach was a right granted to all SA Citizens, not just a select few. And the last time i checked i pay the goverments salary via my taxes, therefore i am entitled to critisized. Welcome to Western Democracy, this is what liberation was all about.

  • neonpigeon - 2010-11-26 09:26

My Christmas wish is that people use the correct words. You mean 'banal' not 'anal'.

      Susannomore - 2010-11-26 10:19

No, anal works for me. It is more than just dull

  • Debate SA - 2010-11-26 09:31

"as bland as my mom's beef stroganoff" -very good I can't stop laughing!

  • Really?? - 2010-11-26 09:39

the funny thing is that the xmas wish is a very nice thing to do to help people out but they (94.7) seem to use it more as a PR stunt. Making your self look good while helping others isnt what charity is about..

      Friday - 2010-11-26 12:46

I agree with this. ITs lost its magic and does just feel like a pr stunt. Although i'm glad for those who get helped in the process. I just dont like the way its being handled these days. It should be more about givng and less about how many shows people arrange and efforts to raise the money (by this i mean less emphasis on the givers)

  • Graeme - 2010-11-26 09:52

Mark Pilgrim, Alex Jay and Pabi Maloi rock. Sadly Wackhead doesn't do it for me either. Miss the big Guy, intelligence lacking these days. In Wackheads own words " If you're thinking of getting into radio, you don't need an education" .............nice. On the same show he admitted to not knowing the difference between a Masseuse and a Physio, damn that's bright !!

  • reliverevilo - 2010-11-26 09:57

Mike, my Christmas wish is that your christmas wish is granted. I was never a big fan of the highveld brekfast show (with Mansfield) but it wasnt horrible and terrible with a dash of yuk as is the current one (with Whackhead) When Mansfield left i think i listend to this express crap for maximum 4 days and i couldnt take it, I have since tuned into an SABC radio broadcast 5FM. Thank heavens for options hey

  • Vedder - 2010-11-26 10:13

    Joffe my boy!!

  • Susannomore - 2010-11-26 10:16

My sentiments exactly. I stopped listening to the (scripted) show some years ago. When Mansfield left, I tried at regular intervals to listen again, but it is just to painful. 5FM, or 702 if I am waiting to hear a particular issue debated. Question is, why are PrimeMedia still allowing hog slop to be produced? Why are we content with repetition and amateur radio when there are so many other talents more than capable of doing the job?

  • Miggs - 2010-11-26 10:26

Dont like it lump it ! Channel lots of people like it. You dont like the fact that they are helping desperate people or the fact that they not helping you ????? Idiots get a life.

      dlawre30 - 2010-11-26 11:10

they are childish - you are the idiot

  • threezero - 2010-11-26 10:33

I agee with you, pull the plug and come up with something new, Whackhead doesn't have the "authority" Mansfield used to have, without Jeremy this show is nothing.

  • Vaal Donkie - 2010-11-26 10:39

    Try the KFM breakfast show.

  • Limpopoist - 2010-11-26 10:42

I wonder how old are you ,rather listen to UJFM (wits university radio)95.something.you will never regret, play enough balanced music for both blacks and whites(not forgeting indian and coloreds)

      BakkieB - 2010-11-26 11:11

What is black and white music(as well as Indian and colored)??????? Music is music, does not matter what colour your skin is. You may have a preference to different types of music but to classify it depending on skin colour or ethnicity......eish dude

  • kim.voller - 2010-11-26 10:45

catering to the AVERAGE south african mentality... and lets face it... we do have a lot of that out there....

  • Oom Piet - 2010-11-26 10:49

Agreed, the show has become boring and their playlist are predictable. I only listen around 07:10 when they have the window of the world. But even that is slowly fading with repeats on Wednesdays

  • Gorilla - 2010-11-26 10:51

talk about moaning about nothing! - get a life ffs.

  • davidpetersmit - 2010-11-26 10:57

Maybe they should look at what O'Connor and the gang does on KFM in the Cape...always a laugh and always a lot of fun. Especially the surf report!

  • BakkieB - 2010-11-26 11:07

Highveld lost me as a listener as soon as Whackhead took over. I am sorry, but I do not find him funny in the least. The morning shows target audience seems to be the 6-14 year olds. Now listen to 702 or "Backvahranda" Only way Primemdia is going to shut the show down is when adverising revenue drops. Put Mark Pilgrim or Alex Jay on.

  • dlawre30 - 2010-11-26 11:12

Not just you Mate - as can be seen from all the comments. These dimwits should be taken off the air ASAP

  • Royal Otter - 2010-11-26 11:18

Let's be frank - the Rude Awakening was getting a bit thin by the end, and Breakfast Express hasn't gotten any better. Contrived, lame, and mostly cringe-worthy. And the Christmas Wish is a marketing racket, not a beautiful gesture. Our company contacted 94.7 two years ago to say that we'd be willing to give some money towards the wish, but we were told that it's reserved for premium advertisers only, since they are effectively paying for advertising time by participating in the wish. Pity really. I used to hang on for Wackhead's slot ay 07:10 but it's mostly repeats or the same tired gags (phoning someone to get them angry, day after day) but now I've moved to 5FM. I may not always agree with Gareth, but it's thought-provoking and entertaining, guaranteed.

  • melshine - 2010-11-26 11:20

that is why darren scott on jacaranda fm 94.2 still makes every morning worthwhile, and I arrive at work with a smile on my face almost every day! sure they are sometimes irritating but for the most part the smiles are there and the day starts off with a smile! so try to switch and see for yourself!

      magda.geyser - 2010-11-26 12:54

Sorry, I totally disagree. Jacaranda is repeating songs and jokes untill it is not funny anymore. I do not even have them programmed on any of my radios anymore. I listen to 702 or 5fm or I listen to cd's

  • kurt.duplessis - 2010-11-26 11:22

"Breakfast Express" is the correct word, because nothing can make one lose one's breakfast faster than 94.7 in the morning. A few years back it had fresh ideas, but with or without Mansfield's presence, the show started to resemble an episode of dental surgery. No wonder, Jeremy hated the sound of the dentist's drill! Give us something new...please.

  • AJ - 2010-11-26 11:25

93.8 Radio Midrand. (Community) Only plece I can get decent music! Some of the 'dj's'/continuity etc wont exactly set the world alight but they play awesome (read not current) music, which is the whole point of listening as far as I am concerned.

  • shaunnettem - 2010-11-26 11:33

Do what I do, turn it off, sing to yourself and see how everyone smiles at you 'cause they think you are loony, hahaha

  • Amadea - 2010-11-26 11:46

Get a life, listen to a dam CD then if all the shows iritate you somehow. Can't believe this actually got published.

  • Lionel - 2010-11-26 12:14

As I started reading the article, immediately what came to mind was that the author is possible a queen. If you read the article again and have a gay voice in the back of your head, you will see what I mean, by the use of certain words, phrases and construction of sentences. I am not adverse to gays, as we all have some little part to play in this world and it takes all types to make the world go round. I do agree with the author though and to add, we South Africans can really take something good and then beat it to death, by keeping it going well past it's sell by date.

      BvH - 2010-11-26 12:34

Que? Ayúdame, Tonto. No sé lo que su fijación anal se trata! (Forgive me, my Spanish is a bit rusty...)

  • Keith - 2010-11-26 13:21

    DOOS!

  • nyiko.t - 2010-11-26 13:23

Dude, i you dont like the radio station why dont you switch to another one. simple isnt it?

  • egmaarman - 2010-11-26 14:28

Go to www.kfm.co.za and then you'll get what you're looking for... Ryan and the team and a little of Whackhead in the morning is just the dose you need... :)... you see CT is the best, except for the Premier and her cronies

  • FerretGee - 2010-11-26 14:43

All the radio stations in SA are crap. The comercial stations pander to the 15 -30 age group, play mindless music which is foisted on them by the money-pig record labels.Any DJ who tries to play anything other than the playlist during prime time, is fired (ask Mark Pilgrim) and DJ's like Barney Simon have been relegated to student radio. The solution, rather play CD's in your car and at home and then you can choose the music, log on to news websites for latest news and the problem is solved!

  • Zion - 2010-11-26 17:31

Commentators on OFM have the attitude that any subject they choose to comment on gives them absolute knowledge on the subject in question. They come over with a boorish monotone that irritates the living akies out of anyone listerning for more than 15 seconds. At times they try to perk up the show but even worse, It sounds like a baby hiccuping.

  • Zion - 2010-11-26 17:52

If you want irritation by the dozen then just try Radio Naledi and listern to Ta-ka-lani Sesame and whistle to the tune.

  • B4-Forty - 2010-11-27 09:04

I read a couple of the comments below and agree with the few about KFM's breakfast show - it realy does rock and their Christmas wish list is very heartwarming! It might be an opportunity for some companies to do a bit of PR, but wow there has been so much generousity lately. It's a daily reminder of what Christmas is really all about.

  • riaaneolivier - 2010-11-28 05:33

    .

  • HeinekenMan - 2010-11-30 16:27

I totally agree, sam is past her sell by date, Wackhead will never be a proper present, he is childish and stutters along. They should put Mark Pilgrim on in the morning but not Alex Jay. alex and sam should work together as they both like to giggle.

  • Zolani - 2010-12-01 15:12

I agree , I listnen to 5fm, I wish Rob vember can do 94.7 breakfast show

  • ir8m8 - 2010-12-02 10:50

I actually so have to agree...little whackhead is just that, very little, and when i am listening all you hear is everything about his marriage etc etc...so tired!!!

  • Albert - 2010-12-10 23:28

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to place my Christmas wish, bit I will try anyway. My name is Debbie McLardy and our families story is a long one... My husband and I both were unemployed for 8 years I only subsequently got a job and am battling to keep up with the back log in bills and we had no car for many years. A friend of my husband's lent us a car which has broken down. My hubby does the odd plumbing job to be able to bring food into the household. I have now bought a car but cannot afford to put food on the table. My daughter aged 14yrs, excels at school and has received numerous certificates and medals for academics and my son aged 13 years excels at cricket and has won trophies and medals for cricket -(He would like to be the next S.A. Cricket player..I don't want to dampen his dream but I cannot afford extra lessons in cricket to develop his talent and as for both of them I cannot afford the school fees and the uniform s so expensive. I try to sell the odd thing on Bid or Buy to try and bring a little cash in and also get up early and sell at flea markets where I can... Our family have never been on holiday since my children were 2 & 3 years old They say they cannot remember what the sea looks like. I would like to take them on holiday one day, but it will have to be next year as I just started a new job. When both my hubby and I were unemployed we lived off my Mom's pension and I felt bad taking from her very month. She s also a very sickly lady
