Mugabe, 93, jets off to Iran for Rouhani's inauguration

Harare – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has reportedly arrived in the capital Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, Rouhani was expected to be sworn in on Saturday afternoon in a ceremony set to be attended by senior officials from 92 countries.

Rouhani had a landslide victory in May this year. He would be sworn-in for his second term.

'Fierce' critic of President Lungu arrested in Zambia

Lusaka – Zambian authorities have reportedly arrested yet another opposition leader, who is a fierce critic of President Edgar Lungu, in the latest sign of a crackdown on dissent.

Writing on his Facebook page Saviour Chishima, leader of the United Progressive People (UPP), said that he had been arrested and was being taken to the police headquarters in Lusaka.

Maimane asks Zuma to show leadership in Zambia

Cape Town - On the eve of President Jacob Zuma's visit to Zambia, DA leader Mmusi Maimane called on him to distance himself from "dictators" like Zambian president Edgar Lungu.

"President Zuma must use this engagement with President Lungu to raise South Africa’s strong objections to the crisis unfolding in Zambia under Lungu’s watch,” Maimane said in a statement on Friday.

"In particular, President Zuma should denounce the inhumane treatment in prison of the Zambian leader of the opposition, Hakainde Hichilema, and to call for his immediate release."

Mbeki calls on AU observers to 'intervene' should 'things go wrong in Kenya polls

Nairobi - Former president Thabo Mbeki was in a jovial mood on Friday morning as he called on African Union election observers to intervene should things go wrong in Kenya’s polls on Tuesday.

Amidst predictions that some violence could occur, Mbeki, who heads the AU Elections Observation Mission to the country, said the AU as well as Kenyans themselves were hoping for "free, fair, credible, peaceful elections".

Mbeki said even as Kenyans have learnt "their own lessons from their own history" of violent elections in the past, some of the candidates have said the AU would be the first port of call, should complications arise.

Zim land reforms: Mugabe 'getting undue credit', war vets claim

Harare – Zimbabwean war veterans have reportedly claimed that President Robert Mugabeis improperly getting credit for the controversial land reform programme, adding that the veteran leader had "no land reform policy" during the height of the reforms.

Thousands of white commercial farmers and their employees were displaced and left without sources of income during the fast-tracked agrarian reforms that were masterminded by Mugabe's administration in 2000.

Bashir, wanted by ICC, arrives in Morocco for a 'private visit'

Rabat - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, wanted on genocide charges by the International Criminal Court, arrived in Morocco late Thursday for a "private" visit.

Bashir arrived at Tangiers airport, accompanied by ministers and other senior Sudanese officials, according to the Le360 news site, considered close to circles in Morocco's royal court.

Earlier in the day the official Sudanese news agency said the president was making a "private" visit of several days to Morocco, without giving details.
