Vigorous exercise is top of mind for many right now as a way to launch into the new year. It also allows you to drop your mask when training in the streets, a park, the gym, or any other public space - provided you keep a metre-and-a-half distance from others.

The regulations say the removal of your mask while doing vigorous exercise is "subject to directions on what is considered to be vigorous, issued by the Cabinet member responsible for health". Months after this regulation was first made, no such directions have been published.

This has made it difficult for places like gyms - which have seen a drop in membership numbers since they were forced to close during the early months of lockdown, from March until August - to properly adhere to government regulations.
