The Constitutional Court’s ruling on Tuesday will undoubtedly be part of Public Protector Busiswe Mkhwebane’s legal arsenal in defending herself against the tide of personal costs orders currently being sought against her, writes Karyn Maughan.

The Constitutional Court has set aside the personal costs order granted against Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in a legal battle over former President Jacob Zuma’s tax records – after warning courts not to grant such orders against her on an "unwarranted" basis.

In a unanimous ruling delivered by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga on Tuesday morning, South Africa’s highest court expressed concern over "the disturbing frequency and regularity of applications for, and awards of, personal costs orders against the Public Protector".
