The ANC secured four wards in yesterday’s by-elections.
According to results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the ANC retained Ward 2 in Nala, Free State, with its candidate Meriam Ncheche taking 47% of the votes.
The ANC also retained Ward 5 in Swellendam, Western Cape, with candidate Gladys Libazi securing nearly 73% of the votes. Ward 1 in Amahlathi was uncontested and secured by ANC candidate Dumisani Mzili.
The ANC managed to defeat the DA in Ward 10 of Witzenberg (Ceres) in the Western Cape, with its candidate Andries Smit taking 43% of the votes.
The IEC said that councillor Piet Waterboer in Ward 10 was a DA councillor in the 2011 local government elections. However he defected to the ANC and in January 2013 won the ward for the ruling party.
The ANC in the Western Cape said it was elated with the results.
“The ANC also notes the ANC won with a marked margin over the DA,” said provincial leader Marius Fransman.
“The ANC is elated with the trust and support of the voters that showed the ANC is still the only party that represents their hopes and aspirations.”
