Cape police nab Brazilian handbag thief

Cape Town police arrested a Brazilian man for allegedly stealing

two handbags at a restaurant.

Colonel Billy Jones said the 51-year-old man and three companions

were among those who watched the World Cup opening match at the Cape Quarter

restaurant in Green Point on Friday.

The man and his friends allegedly stole two handbags belonging to

two South African women.

“The suspect – who was in possession of one handbag – was spotted

and detained by the security guard at the entrance of the restaurant,” said

Jones.

“His companions fled on foot with the other handbag and are

currently still at large. Police were called to the restaurant and arrested the

51-year-old man.”

The man appeared in the Cape Town magistrates court on

Saturday.

“He is remanded in custody at the Goodwood prison and will appear

again on Tuesday. The suspect has been in the country for just over a month and

stayed at a hotel in Green Point,” said Jones.

The handbag that was recovered was returned to the owner but the

second handbag is still missing. It contained a camera and cash worth R32

000.
