ANC Youth League president Julius Malema wore David Tlale, e.tv presenter Pearl Modiadie was in Gert-Johan Coetzee, a pregnant Zuraida Jardine rocked a Nicole Miller halter, Tammy-Ann Fortuin was fierce in a fiery Kluk CGDT and Uyanda Mbuli looked killer in Diamond Face Couture (DFC).
The 2011 J&B Met saw musicians, actors and presenters battling it out with politicians and businessmen to be crowned the best dressed of them all.
Even Malema turned to designer du jour Tlale to style him, which was a huge improvement for the political firebrand. Obviously someone finally delivered the memo to him that big European brands that cost the earth don’t necessarily maketh the man. Welcome to the real fashion fan club Juju!
Unfortunately, even though this year’s theme, Larger Than Life, gave label lovers the license to go crazy, most celebrities and local personalities went for safe options. Not many braved the fashion front except for Somizi Mhlongo, who pulled out the fierceness in a black and white Lady Gaga-inspired outfit with exaggerated shoulder pads and a bustier, by Tlale of course.
Another local personality who pulled out all the stops was etv’s young Modiadie, who wore a royal blue dress with a multicoloured windmill detail that actually rotated.
The avant garde dress, which landed Modiadie a spot in the top 10 best dressed of the day, was by Gert-Johan Coetzee. This young designer’s star has definitely been on the rise since he broke away from Mbuli’s DFC label.
Others who tried hard to stay faithful to the theme included holistic lifestyle TV show presenter Zuraida Jardine, who brought her big baby bump to party. The former 5FM presenter is expecting her baby in three weeks’ time. Despite that, Jardine donned a pair of stilettos and a black satin Nicole Miller halter neck dress with gold accents.
Other celebs who looked exceptional included Bonang Matheba in a purple Gert-Johan Coetzee dress and Sashi Naidoo in a Ken Baker dress bought by her husband while on a recent trip to New York.
Primrose Crous made her husband look good as she dazzled in a pink Pallu dress.
The ever fashionable Mbuli also impressed the Met judges as she walked away with the Best Themed outfit prize in a... shall we say interesting ensemble of red and black lace overlay and an over-exaggerated head piece.
There was also the Carducci squad – seems like every second guy was dressed by the fashion house. These included
Lulo Cafe, model Stevel Marc (in a Carducci suit, spectacles and shoes), Stoan Seate, Dimplez and DJs Milkshake and Vigilante.
Everyone was well behaved on the day, with no celeb bad behaviour to report. Bummer!
