Couple conquers crocodiles to earn World Cup ticket

A husband and wife swam through a crocodile-infested river – with his brother standing guard with a gun on the shore – for a chance to win a ticket to the Soccer World Cup final.

Maurice Meyer and his wife Nicole, from Nelspruit, plunged into the Crocodile River in an attempt to win the VIP ticket worth R100 000 in a Jacaranda 94.2 competition.

The couple uploaded two videos of their adventure on Youtube.

The first video shows Maurice diving into the raging river and navigating his way to the other side.

The second video shows how he was followed closely behind by his wife – who seems to take some time to pluck up the courage to join her husband on the other side.

After splashing her way across the water, the two reunite in a hug.

While the video of his wife’s swim had been viewed 500 times, Maurice faltered behind with 310 views of his escapade.

The radio station was offering the tickets to someone who did something special, Beeld newspaper has reported.

“All the proposals which the DJ got sounded half-baked. I thought, why not swim in a river known for crocodiles and hippos,” Meyer told the newspaper.

The management of the radio station did not support Meyer’s challenge because they thought it was too dangerous – but posted both videos – on its website.

The winner of the competition was still being finalised.
