De Lille to focus on violence against women, children

Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille plans to “hit the ground running” following her swearing in as Western Cape Social Development MEC yesterday.

De Lille was sworn in at provincial premier Helen Zille’s office in Cape Town.

Her spokesperson, Steven Otter, said among De Lille’s priority focus areas in the coming weeks would be violence against women and children in the province.

De Lille had noted a report in a weekend newspaper on the “shocking increase” in sexual offences against children – according to the latest police statistics, these rose by 36% – as well as attempted murder and murder of children (up 42% and 15% respectively).

“She will be meeting heads of department and is planning on hitting the ground running,” Otter said.
