Dog mauls baby, drunk mother charged with neglect

A Port Elizabeth mother who was allegedly drunk when a family dog mauled her three-month-old child has been charged with child neglect, Eastern Cape police said today.

The child was in a serious condition in hospital and police could not yet arrest the mother who was minding the infant, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said.

It is believed that the mother and her two sister were drunk when they left the boy on the floor on Sunday.

One of the four dogs in the house bit the child, severely damaging his testicles.

Community members alerted the police about the incident.

“We will arrest the mother as soon as the child recovers,” Labans said.
