A farmer’s wife, home alone on a Wesselsbron farm, wounded a robber who approached her after ignoring a warning shot, Free State police said.
Cecelia Steynberg was woken by the barking of her dogs around 3.15?am yesterday morning, spokesperson Sergeant Puleng Motsoeneng said today.
She heard a noise in the passage and went to investigate.
The light in the passage kept flickering on and off and an intruder was busy trying to break through the security gate.
Steynberg took her gun from a safe and called her employees on a two-way radio.
While calling for help, a man entered her room brandishing a firearm.
She fired a warning shot, but the man continued bearing down on her.
She fired another shot, hitting him in the neck. He was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard.
According to police, the man was part of a group of four. The other three were still on the run.
Steynberg’s car keys and the man’s unlicensed firearm were recovered.
