One of controversial billionaire businessman Robert Gumede’s companies, Gijima Holdings, will assess the competency of senior government managers for the next three years.
Gijima Holdings is among 10 firms appointed to conduct assessments during the recruitment of senior managers and to help identify “development gaps” in the skills of existing managers.
The firms started conducting the assessments last month and will continue until March 2014.
Other companies doing the assessments include auditing firm Deloitte & Touche, SABC board member and author Peter Harris’s Resolve Group, and executive recruitment agency Landelanhi Assessments.
Senior government managers include directors-general, deputy directors-general, chief directors and directors.
The assessments will cost about R7 000 each, according to a circular sent to heads of national and provincial departments in March by public service and administration director-general Themba Maseko.
According to Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Baloyi, 204 applicants for senior management positions have had their qualifications verified since August 2009.
“The verification of 92 qualifications for a further 30 senior management candidates is in progress,” Baloyi said.
He said these included applicants to senior management positions which may or may not be in the public service.
Baloyi said the verification process was to find out if candidates who had misrepresented their qualifications were considered for the positions they had applied for. He said the process was not looking at dismissals due to false qualifications.
