Heavy rains claim toddler’s life

A three-year-old boy was killed after heavy rains caused a wall to collapse in the house where he was sleeping, the Tshwane metro council said today.

Spokesman William Baloyi said the wall of the house in the Winterveldt area, about 30km north of Pretoria, collapsed as a result of the heavy rains on Sunday night.

Fifteen shacks in the Lusaka informal settlement in Pretoria’s Mamelodi area were flooded on Sunday, he said.

No one was injured and temporary accommodation was provided at a nearby community hall.

Five houses in Soshanguve’s Mabopane area were also flooded.

Emergency authorities managed to pump water from four of the houses, while the occupants of the fifth house were provided with a tent.

Several roads in Pretoria West had to be temporarily closed on Sunday due to flooding.
