Karabus still waiting for passport in UAE

South African doctor Cyril Karabus will try for a fifth time today to get his passport back from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

His son Michael told the Cape Argus his father waited for hours in a UAE court yesterday to get his passport-clearance documents.

“He received the documents after a five-hour wait, but when he got to the prison, where his passport is held, he was told he had the wrong paperwork,” he said.

“He will go back to court again today for the right papers, and, if everything goes well, he will be on his way back home this evening.”

The 78-year-old paediatric oncologist has been detained in the UAE since August 18, after being sentenced in absentia for the death of a Yemeni girl he treated for leukaemia in 2002.

He was acquitted on March 21, but was not allowed to leave the country pending an appeal.

On April 24, the UAE lost its appeal against his earlier acquittal after an appeal judge found him not guilty on all charges.

His lawyer Michael Bagraim told the newspaper the delay at this stage was due to Karabus being listed as a “fugitive of justice” on the UAE database.

His status had to be updated and the clearance could take a while.

“But we are hoping he will be able to fetch his passport this morning,” he said.

It was for this reason he had not approached the South African government for another passport.
