‘Kill the Boer’ fears could be without foundation – expert

Whites’ fears about the singing of struggle songs could be entirely without foundation, an expert witness for AfriForum testified in the Julius Malema hate speech trial.

Dr Anne-Marie Gray, a witnesses called by the Afrikaner civil rights group in its case over Malema’s singing of “Dubula ibhunu” (Kill the Boer), conceded under cross examination that outsiders may not always fully comprehended struggle music.

She was “absolutely” in favour of bringing groups together to talk about these songs in the interest of nation building, Gray told the Equality Court, sitting in the South Gauteng High Court.

Gray, a former lecturer in Music Education at the University of Natal who teaches part time at the University of the Free State, is an expert in liberation songs of the ANC, PAC and Inkatha.

Earlier in the day she testified that the origin of “Dubula ibhunu” was unknown.

She had never come across records of the song, she said. She heard the song for the first time in 2010.

However, advocate Muzi Sikhakhare told Gray that Collins Chabane, Minister in the Presidency, had recorded the song in 2002.

Gray testified that the song had “no musical value” because it was a chant. She found some chants “hurtful”, Gray said.
