Power utility Eskom and officials of the Mafube local municipality in the Free State were today locked in meetings to try and avoid a power cut.
Mafube mayor Madala Ntombela said Eskom was considering proposals made by the municipality to pay a R23 million outstanding electricity account.
“They are sitting in a meeting with a letter on a proposed agreement.”
Eskom had threatened to cut electricity supply to the municipality if the account was not settled by today.
The municipality, which covers towns such as Frankfort, Villiers, Cornelia and Tweeling, paid Eskom R8 million in December last year.
Ntombela was confident that an agreement would be reached by Wednesday morning.
