Man arrested for Gasa slaying

Police have arrested a man in connection with the brutal murder of prominent KwaZulu-Natal businessman Nhlanhla Gasa, a family spokesperson has told City Press.

Gasa (63) was stabbed to death and dumped in the Tugela River on Tuesday.

His body was found on Wednesday.

Family spokesperson Louis Seeco said they had been told by investigators yesterday that one man had been arrested on suspicion of murdering the former Umgeni Water Board chairperson.

“According to what police now say, there is one person who has been arrested,” said Seeco.

“There is a likelihood that there are another two suspects, who they are looking for. That is what we know at this stage.”

The police media liaison personnel were not immediately available to confirm the arrest.

Seeco said the family had not been given any indication of the motive behind Gasa’s murder.

Police believe the former Tongaat Hulett and Transnet executive was murdered at his luxurious home in Umhlanga’s up-market Windsor Drive.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge told City Press this week that it appeared Gasa had initially been attacked and repeatedly stabbed at his home.

They believe he was then dragged bleeding to his Jaguar, which his attackers used to drive him about 70km to the Tugela River.

His killers dumped his body and set the car alight.

Passers-by saw his body floating in the river and, believing he had drowned, called the police.

Police confirmed Gasa was stabbed several times.

Seeco said the Gasa family was “focusing on grieving and the funeral”, which will be held in Ulundi on Friday.

Gasa has four children, among them former Miss SA Mbali Gasa, and fashionista and writer Noni Gasa.
