A Durban man has appeared in court for corruption after he
allegedly offered a police officer a R40 000 bribe to release counterfeit goods,
national police said today.
Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said Mervyn Naidoo allegedly contacted an
official from the harbour police last week and offered him the bribe.
In return the police officer was to release a container filled with
a variety of counterfeit goods including fake Guess jeans and Uzzi
clothing.
“Instead the warrant officer contacted the provincial crime
intelligence office and through a planned police action at the harbour Naidoo
was arrested on Monday, as he made payment to the warrant officer and two
constables.”
He said Naidoo apparently acted as a middle man representing a
major logistical company.
He appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on Tuesday, and was
released on R4?000 bail. He was expected to appear again in February.?
