Mandela recovering from collapsed lung – report

Nelson Mandela is recovering from a collapsed lung and could be released from hospital as early as tomorrow, a source close to the former statesman told Reuters. The 92-year-old icon was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg yesterday for what his foundation described as routine tests.

“Mandela was treated by military doctors and should be discharged tomorrow,” the source said, asking not to be named.

Earlier, The Star reported that Mandela was seen by Professor Michael Plit, a specialist pulmonologist (who deals with diseases of the respiratory system). “He has been admitted for investigation,” Plit was quoted as saying. He would not say what Mandela’s condition was or if he had examined him, except to say he had seen him yesterday, Sapa reported.

President Jacob Zuma and the ruling ANC appealed for calm today after the hospitalisation set off speculation about Mandela’s health.

“President Mandela is comfortable and is well looked after by a good team of medical specialists,” Zuma said in a statement. The ANC said there was no reason to panic. “He is 92 years old and will have ailments associated with his age, and the fact that he stayed the night should not suggest the worst,” ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said.
