Mbombela municipal manager carries on as normal despite fraud charges

The Mbombela city council has not decided what action to take against its municipal manager, who was charged with fraud and corruption on Friday.

Mayor Sipho Mathonsi sent an email to employees yesterday. It confirmed that Noko Seanego had been charged and that he was continuing with his duties as normal.

City Press has seen the email.

Seanego was charged in connection with the hiring of 30 law enforcement officers for Mbombela last October.

He and other Mbombela officials allegedly gave preference to ANC cadres and violated laws and procedures during the appointment process.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union lodged complaints about alleged irregularities in the appointment process.

A Samwu shop steward who complained was suspended from his job as a traffic officer.

Mbombela spokesperson Joseph Ngala told City Press: “The council has not decided on the next course of action. Ordinarily, the council would convene a special meeting to look into this matter. The mayor’s email only sought to confirm that the manager was facing charges and to stop the workers from guessing.”

Seanego was released on R2 000 bail when he appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court last week. The case was postponed to February 19.

Jane Sithole, the Democratic Alliance’s spokesperson on community safety and security in Mpumalanga, called on Mathonsi to suspend Seanego and other implicated officials.

“The DA wants the mayor and council to save the integrity of law enforcement and the Mbombela municipality ... by suspending Seanego from work immediately, pending the outcome of all investigations against him,” Sithole said.
