Mentally handicapped boy allegedly whipped by teacher

Labour relations officials have been asked to investigate a teacher who apparently whipped a seven-year-old mentally handicapped boy with a plastic water pipe.

Charne Dolf (25) told the Cape Town tabloid, the Daily Voice, today that her son Lee-Hagen arrived at their Cape Town home last week with his lower body covered with numerous bruises.

“From what I understand Lee-Hagen was refusing to move from his desk or come out of the class, so they called the vice-principal and she hit him,” Dolf was quoted as saying.

“The next Friday we went there and she showed us this plastic water pipe she used to hit him with. She said that he was being problematic and she had reached her last straw.”

Bronagh Casey, the spokesperson for education MEC Donald Grant, told the newspaper the matter had been referred to the Directorate for Labour Relations.

She reportedly said they viewed the matter in a serious light.
