Mountain biker rescued

An injured man was rescued from a ravine in the mountainous Shongweni area, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said today.

The mountain biker was riding through when he fell off his bike and landed in a ravine,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

He fractured his leg at around 8am.

Paramedics and the police’s air wing carried out a three-hour rescue operation.

“Netcare paramedics arrived at the area and had to hike a substantial distance down the mountain to get to the seriously injured man,” said Botha.

The air wing was called in to assist as the man had to be hoisted with a winch to the top of the mountain from a helicopter.

“After the patient was stabilised and packaged in a specialised stretcher, he was hoisted to where a medical helicopter and crew was standing by to fly him to the Netcare St Augustine’s hospital.”
