Ex-top cop Jackie Selebi will reportedly have to pay out of his own pocket for the appeal against his corruption conviction.
“After considering a spectrum of all relevant factors, the state took a decision not to pay for legal costs for Mr Selebi’s appeal process,” justice spokesperson Tlali Tlali told The Star.
Selebi confirmed that the state had declined his application for funding the appeals process.
“I will have to see what I can do. I’ve not considered (how I will pay for the appeal),” said Selebi.
But he insisted that he was going ahead with it. “I’m going to continue,” said Selebi.
He was found guilty of corruption in the Johannesburg High Court in July and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
The state did foot the bill for his defence during the trial which cost a total of R17.4?million.
