In a City Press exclusive, performance artist Umlilo, formerly known as Siya the Anarchist, reveals the second single off his upcoming album with his latest ultra haute music video Chain Gang.
The video reveals this genre and gender-bending artist’s lush alter ego Rita and, in his/her own words, it is absolutely “to die for”.
The video takes place at the unfortunate funeral for Rita. But who is she?
“She’s sort of the Queen B of this Chain Gang and she attends her own funeral that her nonchalant fashion friends have come to and we see her getting ready for her dying day but there’s so much mystery surrounding her death; whether she was killed; whether it was murder, drugs or suicide – no one really knows.”
Her friends are this new-rave, vamp-goth, post-trance ménage who lurk somewhere deep in the forgotten underground only to appear for the glamorous burial of their ever fabulous but utterly tragic Rita.
Umlilo channels King Karl (Lagerfeld), the high priest of fashion with Ldy Gaga-esque studded glasses and some lacy Madonna kit-gloves circa True Blue.
He is owning as the enigmatic leader of this hedonist horde throwing down a dirty rhythmic rap. As an emcee, his words are slippery and hard to grasp but their meaning and flow connect the dots with what was missing in Out of My Face – the artists breakout single.
Finally, you feel the depth and depravity of Umlilo’s project in this dark disco for Rita and her very best friends. We can’t get enough of this breakout artist so keep your eyes out, he’s going to take us all in a glitterbomb storm.
