Pupil with possible meningitis dies

A Durban High School pupil died after he collapsed on the rugby field this week with possible meningitis.

Madodandile Mavaleliso died later in hospital after the match against Hoerskool Transvalia, from Gauteng, according to the Saturday Star.

The incident happened at a rugby festival hosted by Glenwood High School.

Life Entabeni Hospital confirmed that the 14-year-old had been admitted in a critical condition to the intensive care unit.

“He later died, despite all efforts of the medical team,” spokesperson Leanne Nyiri told the newspaper.

She said, as a precautionary measure, all people who had been in contact with Madodandile had been given prophylactic treatment.

The cause of Madodandile’s death was being investigated.

Springbok and Stormers rugby player Schalk Burger was on Wednesday diagnosed as also having contracted bacterial meningitis.

Fiona de Souza, spokesperson for the Burger family, said the rugby player would remain in hospital for the next 14 days whereafter it will be at least another six weeks before he would be fit for playing.

Burger contracted the infection following an operation to reduce pressure on a nerve that was influencing the performance of his calf muscle.

Bacterial meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord.
