Queen Elizabeth II turns 85, attends church

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is to mark her 85th birthday today by attending the traditional Maundy Service at Westminster Abbey – where the royal wedding will be held next Friday.

The televised service is seen as something of a dress rehearsal – at least for the media – for the nuptials on April 29 between Kate Middleton and Prince William, the queen’s grandson.

The queen is due to mark 60 years on the throne in June next year. She will celebrate her “official” birthday with a large military parade in mid-June.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed today that William and Kate visited the grave of Princess Diana, William’s mother, at her family home.

Diana, who died in a car accident in Paris in August, 1997, is buried on a small island in a lake at her family estate of Althorp in Northamptonshire, in central England.
