R500K drug lab raided in Soweto

A drug manufacturing laboratory was discovered by the Hawks in Chiawelo, Soweto, in the early hours of today, Gauteng police said.

Drugs and drug manufacturing chemicals with a street value of about R500?000 were found inside the house on Chiume Street, Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said.

“Inside they found equipment which included a measuring scale, blenders, gas cylinders, fans, heaters and 30 mandrax tablets.”

The police also found 20kg of “tableting agent”, which is the chemical and raw material used to make drugs.
“The residence has been under observation by police for quite some time,” Ndou said.

The breakthrough came after the Hawks conducted an intensive intelligence-driven investigation.

Ndou said no one was found in the house when the police raided, but information was being followed to locate the drug dealers.
