SA soldiers injured in Sudan recovering

Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who were critically wounded in an ambush in Sudan are recuperating well.

“One of the members ... has since been transferred to one of the military hospitals in South Africa, while another is steadily recovering in a... hospital in El Fasher, Northern Darfur in Sudan,” Lt-Col Andries Matlaila said in a statement today.

Two other soldiers, who had minor wounds, were fully recovered and had rejoined their unit.

The soldiers were part of a United Nations/African Union peacekeeping force in Sudan.

They were wounded in an ambush on October 28 when a section of 4 SA Infantry Battalion, who had to fetch water from a nearby waterhole in Kutum, came under fire from a suspected rebel group.

“A team comprising of various specialists dealing with post traumatic disorders has been convened to assist all those who were involved in the ambush, psychologically, spiritually, and mentally,” Matlaila said.
