Sangoma in court over teen bride

A sangoma will appear in the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court today for breaching a court order forbidding him to see his teenage wife, Limpopo police said.

Colonel Ronel Otto said today the 57-year-old man was arrested on Friday.

The sangoma was initially charged with marrying a minor, but the case was withdrawn in January.

Instead, a court order was issued preventing him from seeing the 13-year-old girl, who was taken to a place of safety.

Posing as her uncle, the sangoma went to see her on Friday, Otto said.

Social workers went looking for her and found her at his house. Her mother was also there.

The sangoma and the mother were arrested for contravening the court order, she said.
