Selebi back in court

Sentencing procedures against ex-top cop Jackie Selebi, guilty of corruption, were set to continue in the High Court in Johannesburg today.

The case was postponed until today on July 14, after some of the witnesses scheduled to testify in mitigation of sentence were not available.

During the last hearing, former police commissioner Denn Alberts spoke glowingly of Selebi as a “hands-on” person who was “seriously against crime”.

Selebi was found guilty of corruption on July 2 for receiving payments from convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti.

In his judgment, Judge Meyer Joffe said both Selebi, and the state’s star witness Agliotti, had fabricated evidence and lied.

After the declaration of the verdict, Joffe heard that Selebi had two previous convictions – one for possessing an unlicensed firearm on his return to South Africa from exile as an ANC member, and another for damaging apartheid-era police property.

A National Prosecuting Authority official said ahead of the case that the State was entitled to ask for a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
