Senior SAPS members sweat it out

With the music thumping, and under the watchful eye of Baby Jake Matlala, cops sweated it out in Silverton, Pretoria, this week.

It’s a sight you don’t often get to see, but with police boss General Bheki Cele’s “stomach-in-chest-out” motto, a constant reminder for a slimmer police department, the group was determined to shed the extra kilos.

“I lost nine kilograms since I started this programme,” said Colonel Elsie Strydom.

Although there were a few cops who mastered the pace and intensity of the exercises, others simply could not keep up and were left breathless and out of sync with the music.

“I have been in the police service for 28 years and as you get older, your strength is no longer the same as when you were younger,” said Strydom.

“You cannot assume that every body can do this as you have to consider things like your medical history.”

Colonel Shahied Isaacs said individuals could choose alternative ways of staying fit. “People have the option to walk if they feel that the aerobics is too intense for them,” said Isaacs.

He said the programme has been so successful that the organisers were thinking of giving a prize to the cop who loses the most weight.

The station had invited Baby Jake along to give some encouragement to their staff.

The weight-loss programme was implemented at the station last year after Cele issued a stern warning to cops that they should lose weight in order to be able to protect the citizens of the country.
