Seven drunks a day on roads

Eastern Cape traffic officials have arrested an average of seven

drunk drivers a day on the province’s roads this month, the provincial transport

department said today.

It said officials had stopped and screened more than 61?000

vehicles since the December 1 start of the festive season Arrive Alive

campaign.

More than 18?000 fines had been issued, 590 vehicles impounded

(including 36 buses and 219 minibuses) and 740 people arrested.

The arrests included 140 for drunken driving, 44 for overloading

and 29 for speeding.?
