Banyana Banyana coach Augustine Makalakalane today announced what he believes is his 21 best squad for the forthcoming Caf African Women’s Championships.
The tournament kicks off on October 31.
Makalakalane had to omit two players and said it was a difficult task to do.
The coach however, said he selected players who have proven to be mentally and physically strong to endure all the tournament challenges.
“These players passed all the programmes and showed discipline, commitment and tactical ability after going undergoing a six-week rigorous training with the support of a scientist, a psychologist and a physical trainer,” said the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.
However there were some noticeable absentees from the team including midfielder Mpumi Nyandeni and former captain Portia Modise, but Makalakalane said he has made the right choice.
Captain Simphiwe Dludlu urged all South Africans to rally behind the team and show the same support that was afforded to Bafana during the World Cup.
“With support from the fans and the sound of the vuvuzelas, we will be able to sustain good performance throughout the championship,” said Dludlu.
“It does not matter how many caps a player has, all that matters is how they perform on the field. We will do our best to hoist the country’s flag high.”
