Mamelodi Sundowns today unveiled Bafana Bafana star Teko Modise as their new player.
Modise, who spent four years at Orlando Pirates, joins Mamelodi Sundowns on a three-and-a-half-year deal that will see him wearing the famous jersey number 8.
The number was made famous by Alex “Barnes” Bapela, who is now the club’s technical co-ordinator.
The 28-year-old midfielder said he was sad to have left Pirates, but conceded it was part of life.
“I will miss Pirates because I had a great time over there, but supporters must understand that it is part of football. My focus is now on Sundowns,” said Modise, who left the club under a cloud after he went AWOL a fortnight ago.
He was supposed to appear before the club’s disciplinary committee yesterday when the Downs offer surfaced.
Modise said he was happy to join a list of other Bafana stars at Chloorkop, adding he would be up to the challenge.
As much as he agreed he didn’t expect to walk into the starting line-up, he said he would work hard to impress the technical team.
“I know it won’t be easy for me, but this has been the situation wherever I went and I will work hard to claim a position in the team. I want to win something with Sundowns and they are in a good position to lift the Absa Premiership and I want to contribute towards that success,” said Modise.
He said he was not ready to play as yet as he wanted to get used to his new team-mates, but said it would not be long before he gets game time.
