It’s official: Idols judge Mara Louw will be replaced by Metro FM’s Unathi Msengana.
After a very controversial season six of the TV show – during which Louw admitted to appearing on the show after taking an energy drink with vodka on top of strong pain medication; wore fake Louis Vuitton and caused a storm following comments on South Africans’ tendency to vote according to the race of contestants – M-Net has apparently heeded calls by the public to replace her.
The recording artist and songwriter will judge the 7th season of the show which is due to start in June.
M-Net spokesperson Lani Lombard said Msengana brought a fresh angle to the popular reality show.
“Idols 6 was a phenomenal hit, but to keep the show appealing for existing audiences and build the Idols fan base, M-Net re-evaluated all aspects of the format to rejuvenate the show. We felt a need to review the panel, and considered several options. Unathi has her finger on the pulse of popular culture, she is charming yet opinionated and is a role model for many youngsters.”
Msengana will kickstart her stint as judge when Idols auditions start in Cape Town on February 12.
M-Net confirmed that Louw would not play any part in the new season of Idols.
