Bloemfontein

A day trip from the Free State capital is Kimberley’s Mine Museum and Big Hole in the Northern Cape where you can check out what life was like during the town’s diamond rush and you can take a historic tram ride there. The hole is the largest hand-dug excavation in the world at a depth of 215m and it yielded 2 722kg of diamonds.

Cape Town

Durban

Just over an hour inland from Durban the Midlands Meander begins. This country drive takes day-trippers from cheese factories to home-carved furniture stores and there are all sorts of wonderful country lodges to stay in along the way. Check out the Mzansi Zulu Quilt Centre, spend an afternoon fly-fishing or hike in search of the endangered Karkloof butterfly.
