The five shortlisted compositions of young composers who entered the inaugural SA Composers’ Competition will be performed at a concert with Jeremy Silver on the podium at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow on Saturday 4 March at 19:00.

All in the running for the title and a composer-in-residence with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), a new commission and a cash prize, are Somerset West resident Kristi Boonzaaier (Sonsopkoms in die Woestyn), Conrad Asman (“Beyond the Atom”); Owen Dalton (“An Animal Suite”), Anthonie Jansen van Rensburg (“Lagging in the Shallow Water”) and Franco Prinsloo (“The Imbulu Suite”).

Competition convener Louis Heyneman said 29 entries were received from a diverse group of young South African composers, all of which were of a very high calibre. The name of the winner and possible runners up will be announced after the concert.

The judging panel, chaired by Professor Hendrik Hofmeyr of the South African College of Music, included conductors Bernhard Gueller and Graham Lea Cox, and composers David Earl, Arthur Feder, Andile Khumalo and Antoni Schonken.

All the works prior to the selection of the five were judged in a “blind” scenario, in which no entrant could be identified.

V Tickets for the concert with Silver and the CPO cost R150 per person and can be booked online via Quicket at https://qkt.io/UdnFAf.
