ANC Gauteng condemns Tshwane violence

Johannesburg - The Gauteng ANC on Monday condemned the violent acts of some of its members in Tshwane.

“This conduct undermined what the ANC stands for in terms of using democratic and consultative processes to resolve issues and disputes," spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said in a statement.

He welcomed the ANC’s decision, announced on Monday, to make Thoko Didiza its Tshwane mayoral candidate.

The current incumbent, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, and regional leaders supported Didiza’s selection, he said.

However, some party members took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the decision. A small group closed down Schoeman Street and overturned a Tshwane Metro Police car at the corner of Schoeman and Beckett streets, next to the Court Classique Boutique hotel.

The ANC called on police to investigate and apprehend anybody who endangered the lives of others with violence and intimidation.

Didiza was announced as candidate after the provincial executive committee rejected all the names that were submitted initially. The party announced the names of all its mayoral candidates, except Tshwane, on Saturday.
