Johannesburg - The African National Congress Youth League on Thursday called for an overhaul of the party's leadership structures after the party lost three key metros during the election.
“In order for the organisation to live long it must transform and change the way it deals with issues,” secretary general Njabulo Nzuza told journalists in Johannesburg.
Nzuza called for an early national ANC congress to elect new leaders. All the party’s national executive committee members had to account for the party's poor performance.
He wanted a smaller NEC than the current 86-member one, and it should include more young people.
The ANCYL said there is a need to change the design of the top six officials and allow for two full time deputy secretary generals (DSG).
"We strongly believe that we must have a DSG for organisational development and organising to deal with building of structures of the ANC and building organisational capacity. There is a need for the second DSG for monitoring and evaluate the work of government," Nzuza said.
ANCYL president Collen Maine said he was convinced the ANC could not survive in its current form.
