Western Cape vote counting around 90% complete

Cape Town - Vote counting in the Western Cape is close to 90% complete, provincial electoral officer Reverend Courtney Sampson said on Thursday.

"The results at this stage are not complete for the province [but] we are well on our way, close, very close, to 90%," said Sampson.

Results that have been finalised have been posted at voting stations, but none have been declared yet.

The process of auditing results is currently under way.

"This has been quite a remarkable election," said Sampson.

"Many of the challenges that we anticipated and risks that we foresaw never materialised. And I think that there is a certain kind of blessing in that as well."

Engaging communities

He thanked the police and other security officials, including the SA National Defence Force for their good planning.

A panel of 12 mediation experts played a key role in engaging disgruntled communities in the middle of the night and early in the morning, he said.

Instead of waiting for conflict to happen, they identified potential trouble spots and visited the areas to talk to people and make sure they went out to vote.

"This played a key role in the relatively quiet way in which people were prepared to go and vote.

"What will be happening after the elections is anybody's guess. I think we need to keep a very strict eye on that as well."
