Johannesburg - Over the past 11 days some 27 000 allegedly counterfeit Bafana Bafana shirts have been seized at the OR Tambo Airport, reports the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
Various consignments on flights from Qatar, Hong Kong and China have been taken into custody at the airport. Among the total consignments 17 970 shirts were on their way to Swaziland and Botswana.
SARS’s customs division and the attorneys for Adidas, the sponsor of Bafana’s shirts, confirmed that the 17 970 jerseys on their way to Swaziland and Botswana were all counterfeit.
Adidas is currently doing further tests on the remaining 9 032 shirts to determine whether they, too, are fakes.
The SARS customs office is appealing to members of the public to report any suspicious activity.
