Johannesburg - South African President Jacob Zuma will name Gill Marcus, a former deputy governor of the central bank and now chair of Absa Group, to replace Tito Mboweni as head of the central bank, The Mail & Guardian website said on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the bank said a news conference about the current governor's term would be held later on Sunday.
"I can confirm that the presidency has called a press conference and I can also confirm that the press conference is about the central bank governor's term," Samantha Henkeman told Reuters.
Mboweni's second five-year contract ends on August 7. The final decision to reappoint him is up to Zuma but his office has been tight-lipped on whether Mboweni will stay or go.
The website, citing a senior state official familiar with the discussion, said Marcus has been selected to replace Mboweni.
"The trouble is that now it is going to look like Tito was fired," the official was quoted as saying.
The website reported that Mboweni, asked in an earlier media report that he was "set to stay", said: "You got it dead wrong."
