The story: KwaZulu-Natal's daily Covid-19 infections are edging towards the 6 000 mark, raising concerns people are not complying with the adjusted Level 3 lockdown regulations.
How we know: In the past 24 hours, 4 714 new infections were recorded, bringing the province's total number of infections to 209 691. Eighty-five succumbed to the virus in the same reporting period.
What was said: "We are extremely concerned that we have started the New Year on a bad note, having breached the 5 000 mark for daily Covid-19 infections. Three days ago, when we were reporting the statistics for 30 December 2020, our province had recorded 5 846 new infections and 116 deaths," said Premier Sihle Zikalala.
