The probe: Besieged police Crime Intelligence boss (CI) Peter Jacobs and his contemporary at the Hawks, Advocate Godfrey Lebeya, find themselves at the centre of an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) probe into the death of Anti-Gang Unit officer Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear.
What they're investigating: The police watchdog is investigating allegations of defeating or obstructing the ends of justice, on the strength that the pair had forewarning that Kinnear’s cellphones were being illegally tracked nearly two weeks before he was shot.
The background: Despite the chilling knowledge, Kinnear died alone and unprotected when an unidentified triggerman pumped three bullets into his chest as he sat in his car outside his Bishop Lavis home on 18 September.
