The story: Knysna Mayor Elrick Van Aswegen has found himself in hot water on social media and at odds with other politicians following a posting on the Knysna Municipality Facebook page indicating he supports the closure of Garden Route beaches.
What happened: The post which went up on Wednesday night said: "The Knysna Municipality welcomes the newly introduced stringent Covid-19 regulations including the closure of beaches in an effort to curb the spread."
In quotes: "We were warned twice. First, by the president when he introduced similar restriction in Nelson Mandela Bay and when Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize visited the Garden Route. We didn't listen, we left the president with no other choice, but to close our beaches," Van Aswegen said.
